The fastest sport on two feet

At the school, Lacrosse is considered an organized club instead of a recognized school team. But, despite this distinction, the Boys Lacrosse Club still displays the competitive drive to perform at a high level.

Head Coach Rick Mercadante leads his club team with seven years of coaching experience. While his philosophy encourages athletes to push their limits and exceed expectations; ultimately, his goal is to turn the players into well-rounded athletes who contribute positively to the community.

“The first part of my coaching philosophy has nothing to do with playing the game of lacrosse, but rather playing the game of life.  Sportsmanship, honor, integrity and commitment are virtues that are more important in a player than his ability to handle a lacrosse ball.  What is different on the Falcons Lacrosse team is that your ability to play the game is secondary to your character as a person,” R. Mercandante said.

Even though lacrosse is a club, the school still recognizes their contributions as a team, as evidenced by their part in the recent pep rally.

According to senior Jared Mercadante, the Lacrosse Club’s achievements were recognized for the first time at a school event. The relationship between the school and the club is evolving and looks encouraging for the future.

Every sport is a complex combination of mental and physical aspects. Lacrosse is no different. Each individual athlete must challenge themselves physically and mentally each day in order to attain their goals.

“Like most complex sports, lacrosse is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. With 10 players on each team, the ball in constant motion and the exceptional lacrosse player needs to be able to focus on what’s important and let go of everything else.  Controlled concentration is the key to high performance in Lacrosse,” R. Mercadante said.

From freshmen to seniors, all grade levels are encouraged and invited to become members of the club. Lacrosse is a ‘no-cut’ sport and all experience levels are welcome. Also, within the club, the most experienced players assist in coaching` the younger players.

“The younger players are very interested in improving their game, and this makes it much easier for the older players to help them out. We will pull them aside, and give them a few pointers on how they can improve,” senior Seth Enderson said.

Lacrosse is fast pace so it is crucial for the players to evaluate and proceed to make decisions on the field quickly.

“Decisions must be made in a half seconds time or opportunities could be missed that you would not get again. This is what gives lacrosse the title of “the fastest sport on two feet,” Enderson said.
