This season, the school’s Varsity Football team was more successful than ever before in the school’s history, boasting a 9-3 overall record.

The team broke the regular season win/loss record at 8-2, as well as broke records for the most overall wins at 9, most shutouts with 4, and most consecutive wins with 5. Furthermore, the team recorded its highest average to date in points per game with 32.1, most points scored at 345 points, most total touchdowns with 47, and most total offensive yards with 3,758, along with many other miscellaneous records.  The team also brought home the school’s first ever playoff win in football.

“Starting this season, we didn’t know what to expect,” Head Coach Bill Stachelski said.  “We lost 26 seniors last year. But, everybody on the team stepped up and this group of guys really meshed together perfectly, allowing us to achieve everything we did this season.”

The team was led by Junior Quarterback Cole Johnson, who came into a revamped offense.  Deciding to lean on the pass more than the school’s football team had traditionally, even more pressure was put on the first-year quarterback.

“We were expecting a lot from Cole when we drew up the offense in the off-season,” Quarterbacks Coach Tyler Noe said.  “He stepped up to the challenge and was awesome for us this season.”

Johnson himself is already in the record books.  This season alone, he broke records with 1,870 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 116 pass completions, and 26 total touchdowns.  Johnson also holds a record for his 64 percent pass completion rate and is on track to break the career records in all of these categories during his senior year.  He rushed for 429 yards, scoring five rushing touchdowns, and only threw six interceptions while leading his team to the top.

“I knew we were going to be passing a lot this year and I was ready to change Cox to a passing school.  I couldn’t have imagined things would have gone the way they did for us this year,” Johnson said.  “We hope that we can continue to change Cox into a top program next year.”

The team contributes their successes on the field to strong chemistry and focus throughout the entire year.  This chemistry led not only to the many team records set, but also to several other players making it into the school’s record books with Johnson.

Senior Linebacker Sam Brooks achieved the single season tackle record with 112 total tackles, while senior Kicker Joe Stewart surpassed the single season point-after-touchdown record with 32.  Senior Slot Receiver Bradley Jones also tied the career record for most receiving touchdowns with a total of eight.

“We had a lot of outstanding players on the team this year, but the unselfishness shared by all of them is what made us successful,” Stachelski said.  “As a coaching staff, we stressed playing as a team countless times, and we couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”
