The girls Varsity Field hockey team has always gone above and beyond, evidenced in their 23 overall state titles, as well as the four back-to-back state titles won in the past four years.

Although the season just started, the bar is still high for these girls and fans have high expectations for this year’s team, just as in previous years.  Winning records aside, there is still much excitement and nervous energy about what the future holds.

What happened:  Thursday, September 13, marked the girls second game of the season, away against the Cavaliers of Princess Anne High School.  The Lady Falcons once again showed showed their strength and agility, putting on a stellar performance. Falcons spent much of the game playing offensively, holding the Cavaliers to their end of the field, while the left side defense shut down the Cavalier offense. Senior captain and left-back Lauren Sanford led her team; she was able to quickly recover  and move the play forward. Like a brick, the Falcons stood their ground and didn’t give up a goal. The Falcons won with a shutout, 3- 0.

Key playersOffensive players did much of the work maintaining possession and winning corners including: juniors Megan Spear and Sophia Burch, and senior Rose Bannon.

They said it: “Each game, we are continuing to learn and grow as a team. I am looking forward to seeing our full potential as we progress through the season,” senior captain Elyse Unger said.

Key MomentsDuring the second quarter, the Cavaliers managed to get near the Falcons goal.  However, play immediately switched fields and in an instant the whole game migrated from one end to the other.  The Falcons struggled slightly, but not for long.  The Cavaliers ended where they started, defending their goal.

The Lady Falcons will travel to Pennsylvania this weekend to ‘up the ante’ and keep up their high level of play.
