Q&A: Sophomore McKenzie Colvin shows leadership on the volleyball court

Sophomore McKenzie Colvin is already leaving her legacy on the volleyball court, as she was the only freshman starter last year in the area to win a regional championship title and make it to the state finals.

Colvin, as a freshman, also received the Coaches Award and was named All Region Second Team;  these honors almost unheard of being offered to a freshman player. Now, as a sophomore, Colvin is in the running for the All Region First Team, has another shot at the state finals and was a key player in the team’s first place win in the Endless Summer Tournament last weekend.

Q: Why did you decide to play volleyball?

A:(Colvin) “I decided to start volleyball because I had grown up watching my cousin play.  I started Rec Volleyball and immediately fell in love with it.  I enjoyed the whole team aspect and how every part of the game is important till the  end of the game.”

Q: What do you do everyday to grow as a player of this sport?

A: “Everyday, I go into practice giving 100% in all that I do.  I also like to learn from my upperclassmen because they have been around the game at this level longer and have lots of good insight that I may not have known or thought of.”

Q: How are you planning to boost your team’s morale after struggling in the yearly Richmond tournament?

A: “Keep the energy and mood on and off the court light but competitive with one another, be a good role model for the freshman …and get to know each other better on and off the court.”

Q: Being floor captain, what is your role and how do you motivate your team?

A:  “I have to be supportive of all my teammates… and make sure all of them are in a good head space to play the next point.”

Q: What are your hopes for this year?

A: “This year, I hope that we, first, win the Regional Championships.  Then, I hope for our team to make it to the State Finals for the third time in a row, but this time we take home the trophy and state ring.  I love my team so much and especially the seniors that only have this last chance to win states, so I want to do it for them because they deserve it.”
