Lady Falcon Volleyball: “setting” the standard

FRESHMAN KENZIE COLVIN sets up senior Rachael Humphrey during Tuesday’s win against Salem.

Coming off a tough loss in the state championship last year against Langley, the returning players and as well as the newest additions to the team are hungry for the state ring.

This season, the girls have come back without some of the hardest hitters. Without the enormous skill set of starting outside hitter Gracie Johnson or last year’s setters, Alexis Davies-Hackenberg and Ellie Barnum, the girls will need to fight to make a comeback.

“As a team, we came into the season knowing our only goal was to make it to states [championship] again,” senior Rachael Humphrey said. “Last year showed us that we can make it all the way even if no one believes in us.”

The ladies are confident, even though they have some big shoes to fill within the starting line-up. Freshman Kenzie Colvin has already stepped up, making waves as the starting setter.

Colvin has taken over as the “quarterback” of the team, she realizes that the pressure is real, but she plans to stay level-headed and is ready to compete.

“It’s really great that I get to play with such amazing people, and I feel very honored and lucky to be in this position,” Colvin said.

These players are ready and willing to take it all this season. The commitment and leadership they display gives them an edge on even the toughest competition, particularly the Cavaliers from Princess Anne High School.

“We have a hard road ahead and we know this, but we are focused on keeping the mentality we finished with last year. The team gives 100% in practice and this 100% will  show on the court this season,” senior Maddie Butkovich said.
