Culinary generates allergy-safe recipes, ChatGPT

Chat Generative Pre-training Transformer, better known as ChatGPT, is an AI chatbot that has gained popularity around the world. ChatGPT is most commonly used to help students and teachers alike with several things such as composing essays, providing feedback, and helping to brainstorm.

In this case, CHS culinary teacher Amy Goodman and her students brought ChatGPT into the kitchen.  The class was tasked with different clients who had different dietary restrictions–such as celiac disease, hypertension, and diabetes. The class proceeded to make use of ChatGPT’s generative responses to create innovative recipes tailored to their client’s limitations.

“They started prompting the AI with 5 star requests and got back in depth recipes with the ingredients they needed. Students made burritos, stir fries, roasted vegetables, rice bowls, soft cooked egg, potato croquette, mashed potato, and tacos with atypical fillings,” Goodman said. “By incorporating ChatGPT in the kitchen, students were able to present a variety of flavorful dishes that met their clients’ unique requirements.”

The Culinary students were given a list of secret ingredients to choose from and incorporate into their recipes: some of which included rice, canned tomatoes, canned pumpkin, and eggs.

According to Goodman, the students were able to harness their AI-helper and produce some creative dishes that not only fit within the restrictions, but also tasted delicious as well.

By asking unique prompt questions to the ChatGPT database, students were able to discover how to use their ingredients and the different food options that best met their clients’ restrictions.

“I thought it was cool to see the different recipes come out,” sophomore Kathleen Grosz said, ” I made chicken tacos with beans and vegetables.”
