This Tuesday, April 21, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is closed due to the state-wide vote regarding redistricting in Virginia, whether Virginia should keep congressional districts the same until the 2030 census.
Since 58 schools will be used as polling precincts, it was decided that students and staff would be given the day off from school to keep everyone and everything safe and secure.
Other school districts, such as Chesapeake Public Schools, have opted for an asynchronous learning day. Students will have the day off, but the school district will not require time to be made up.
VBCPS has decided that an asynchronous day would not matter; students would still need to make up seat time. So, rather than completing what is necessary in one school day, those in charge decided that students and staff must make up the missed day by adding 10 extra minutes to every school day from Monday, April 13, until the end of the school year.
For CHS, school still starts at the same time, 7:20 a.m., but ends now at 2:10 p.m. rather than 2 p.m. The new bell schedule is below:
Block 1; 7:20-8:50
Block 2; 8:55-10:25
Block 3; 10:30-12:00
Lunch; 12:00-12:35
Block 4; 12:40-2:10
Other Virginia Beach schools have divided the time, just differently. There could have been a better way to deal with the issue. Chesapeake found a way.
