Outdoor Track team starts a successful season
Falcon outdoor track and field athletes have already begun their season with high standards. The team has run in five meets and is now looking towards the postseason races in late May. The Falcon coaching staff hopes to send athletes to the state meet in June.
What happened: The Falcon track and field athletes began their season at an invitational at Norfolk Academy on Saturday, March 23, followed by regular season meets at other Beach District schools including Landstown, Tallwood, and Kellam over the past few weeks.
Key Players: Junior Keontae Jenkins is an all-state sprinter as well as field athlete who has already excelled in the early season meets. Junior Colby Chamberlin has placed well in the 800m. Sophomore Morgan McKinley and freshman Morgan Cowen lead the distance girls from the 400m dash to the 1600m run. Seniors JaSean Curry and Nick Monsor have been out throwing the competition with top 10 finishes in the discus and shot put. All Falcon athletes have contributed to the team’s overall success.
They said it: “This outdoor track season has been good. Most of us have done well in our races. Most of the team has ran personal records, especially in the earliest meets of the season. We are looking forward to the postseason and hopefully making it to [the state meet in June],” sophomore Ariana Coats said.
Key moment: Falcon athletes have won multiple races and events over the season. Both distance runners and sprinters have placed well with excellent times. The field athletes have performed exceptionally in as well.
Up next: A few distance athletes will travel to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, for the Dogwood Track Classic on May 3-4.
