Giving back to the community is something many people may associate with the holiday season, but for this high school senior, it’s an everyday activity. And, while many of her peers spend their time after school playing sports and going to club meetings, senior Alexis Gordon found her niche volunteering.

Gordon’s hobby began in 2008 when she decided to tag along with her mom to Star of the Sea. From that point on, she was hooked.

Gordon spends her free time volunteering at the Judeo Christian Outreach Center, Star of the Sea Church, and the First Colonial Inn retirement home. Gordon volunteers 7 days a week stocking food cans, organizing bread, and assisting with cooking the hot meals. In the past year, she has devoted more than 850 community service hours.

In addition, Gordon travels to the First Colonial Inn and plays BINGO with the elderly residents 4 days a week. She has created close relationships with the residents and enjoys talking to them and bringing them homemade treats.

“I do it out of the kindness of my heart because I care and I want to see those who are less fortunate get back on their feet and start a better life,” Gordon said.
