Would-be Journalism III student, Hadley Fugate, recently moved to Barcelona, Spain, as part of an American Student Exchange Program to continue her studies there.
As a Multimedia Editor, her contributions to the newspaper varied. Not only did Fugate cover sports stories, but she was also dedicated to documenting fashion on the Falcon Press Pinterest page.
Fugate also excelled as a video editor. She created promotional videos for the baseball and girls’ tennis teams for the online newspaper’s Instagram account. Spreading kindness throughout the school was another endeavor Fugate gladly took the lead on, conducting interviews with students and staff members.
Now a junior at Barcelona High School (BHS), a non-traditional international American school, Fugate plans to integrate her work with the newspaper into her new educational path.
Q: What prompted your move to Barcelona?
A: “I have always loved traveling, but not in the traditional touristy way. Whenever I travel, I try to immerse myself in the culture. I wanted to take a step further and live in a new culture, and to step out of my comfort zone and do something that stands out.”
Q: What does your new school offer to fuel your current goals?
A: “The school I attend is great at giving lessons with a basis of trial and error. If you don’t do well on an essay the first time, you’re allowed to correct your grade. If you don’t do well on a math test, you’re allowed to retake it. This helps me better apply what I learn in school to the real world.”
Q: How does your experience from Falcon Press influence your future career path?
A: “Falcon Press helped me narrow my scope as to what I want to do with my future by introducing me to the world of Journalism. The class as a whole inspired me to work in sports marketing, specifically on the Journalistic side of it. Ms. Tonelson has taught me things that I will hopefully take with me in my career on the sidelines!”
Q: How has this change of scenery and increased access to foreign countries impacted your perspective on the world?
A: “It has impacted my perspective in so many ways and in ways I can’t even fully describe. Learning about new cultures and different ways of living has opened my eyes to how big this world is and how diverse it truly is. Meeting people from all different backgrounds has created a bridge for me to experience and integrate myself into these cultures. I am now most familiar with theĀ Catalan culture, and it is so vibrant. The people are so kind, and the balance they have between living life and work is my favorite part.”
