Annual 5k Love Run/Walk benefits CHKD

SENIORS RAYNA TRINADAD, Chris Altekruse, and Lauren Harris pose for a picture before they run three miles.

The Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters (CHKD) aids the millions of children who fight for their lives each day. There comes a time in a community where everyone is able to set aside their differences to give back for a special cause.

The school now co-sponsors the 11th annual Cavalier Love Run/Walk with Princess Anne High School (PAHS) in support of CHKD.

The CHKD Love Run/Walk began with PAHS’s effort to raise awareness to a former SCA president diagnosed with cancer. With the help of CHKD, he was able to overcome his battle. The school joined PAHS two years ago in memorium of SCA Sponsor and Biology teacher Sabrina Shumate’s son, Jack, who passed away as a baby.

“It warmed my heart to know that another school had such big hearts that they would be willing be dedicate a race to someone they’ve never met and only knew about from the story,” Shumate said.

The CHKD Love Run/Walk has grown immensely since it’s humble beginnings, a testimony to the care and dedication within the community as a whole.  This year, students from both schools were even asked to join in a conversation on the local  Hampton Roads news show.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 10 a.m. members of the school, as well as PAHS executive board discussed the history and upcoming information about the race. Current SCA President Nick Webb was one such student.

“Having the experience to go on the Hampton Roads show was a great opportunity! The Love Run Committee and myself had a wonderful time being on set and interacting with the hosts and crew,” Webb said.  “The best part about this experience was being able to talk about the Love Run and the importance of CHKD.”

Linda Fox, a runner diagnosed with thyroid cancer, also made an appearance at the Love Run/Walk, marking her 618th race since discovering and fighting her illness.

According to the pilotonline.com, Fox told herself that she was going to run 1,000 races before she kicks the bucket.  Fox also said that if she runs that many, she will surely help others along the way.

The event was held on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Thalia Elementary at 9 a.m.

The goal of the Love Run is to raise over $10,000 for CHKD.
