Golf team gives it their all on the green
The school’s golf team finished strong again this season with fulfilled expectations. Finishing as the regular season champions, the team’s two month stretch led them to qualify for the regional tournament.
In 2006 the golf team set a Virginia High School League (VHSL) record low score of 584 at the Group AAA Championship. Since setting such a profound record, the team has continued its success, upholding their reputation in the newly restructured conferences. Although the entire team did not make the state title, each player gave it all on the green.
“Our goals are always the same, win the conference, region, and state tournament,” Head Coach Brian Allard said. “We won the conference regular season and qualified for the region tournament. We also had a one player qualify for the state tournament so it was a pretty good year.”
This year’s competition has new meaning as the team now plays teams outside the former Beach District schools. As Conference I competitors, it is harder for the team to advance to state because of the new format, in which only four teams can go to state, opposed to eight.
Junior Amber Roberts qualified for the VHSL Girls State Golf Tournament. Roberts competed against 29 other girls and needed to finish in the top six to advance. She ended up placing fifth, shooting an 83 at the Kempsville Greens Golf Course.
“I made it to state shooting an 83. I was really confident in my swing and I kept my drives in play,” junior Amber Roberts said.
To keep up with the steady competition, the teams practiced four days a week at five public golf courses within Virginia Beach: Redwing, Bow Creek, Kempsville Greens, Virginia Beach National and Stumpy Lake.
“We basically practice all year during the off-season so we don’t lose any of the skills we acquired in the previous year, always pushing us to improve,” junior T.J. Osborne said.
