As the spring sports season is now in full swing, the CHS Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse team is ready to jump into action. After a rocky start, with a 0-3 record, the players are determined to persevere.
This year’s team is led by senior captains Christian Braithwaite, Connor Warren, Michael Collins, and Curtis Bartholomew, as well as junior captain Hunter Faison. Coaches Joseph Zirpolo and Chris Faires are ready for another successful season. Last season, the team reached the state quarterfinals, losing to the Patriots of Patrick Henry High School.
Q: How is the 2025 spring season going so far?
A: “This year’s season is off to a tough 0-3 start. We’ve had trouble with fundamentals like our clears, rides, passing, and catching. Our team is aware it’s time to turn around the season, starting with a big game on Tuesday versus Princess Anne. We’ve been practicing hard, preparing strategically, and plan to achieve our first win of the season,” Senior Captain Christian Braithwaite said.
Q: Do you guys have a plan to overcome your 0-3 record?
A: “There are many things that our team has gone over and reviewed as far as physical mistakes with our game. Although a 0-3 start to the season is rough, the team is still hungry for a win and continues to stay pumped up for every game. If we just continue to play our game and fix the little errors while on the field and mentally, then we can easily turn the 0-3 record around, ” Senior Captain Connor Warren said.
Q: What do you think are some strengths of this year’s team?
A: “This year’s Varsity Lacrosse team is extremely close on and off the field. The defense continues to excel in 6v6 just like previous years. Whether the start of their season was in their favor or not, there’s many strong attributes to this team that will lead them far into the postseason,” Junior Attack Hunter Faison said.
Q: What are some strategies the captains use to lead the team to success?
A: “Captains lead by example and keep the whole team accountable for mistakes. We encourage an environment to work hard for the teams’ success. Constructive criticism is something all the captains and I really admire. In order for the team to grow together, it is important we learn from past errors made during practices or games. I believe team bonding is also key to success for any team. Before each game, we have team dinner and get to share a meal together prior to game days,” Senior Defense Michael Collins said.
Q: If you could describe this year’s team in one word, what would it be?
A: “Resilient.”
