After strenuous conditioning over the summer, the Cross Country season has officially begun. The first meet will take place Wednesday, September 18 at Williams Farms Park, in Virginia Beach from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. CHS will compete against ten different schools, including; Kellam, Ocean Lakes, Tallwood, Landstown, Princess Anne, First Colonial, Bayside, Green Run, Salem, and Kempsville High Schools.
In preparation for meets, runners use some unique methods to ready themselves.
Sophomore Sarah Williams has been a member of the team for two years and is well versed in treating her body right before a meet.
“I normally eat pasta for dinner the night before to increase my carbohydrate intake, and I make sure to stretch well before beginning any event,” Williams said.
Junior Brooke Stafford is a former sprinter who has lately been experimenting with longer distances.
“I agree that it’s important to stretch thoroughly so that you don’t develop a cramp that could hinder your performance,” Stafford said.
Other than maintaining physical strength, it’s also important to maintain mental strength before a run.
“I usually try to hype myself up before it’s time for me to race so that I can get in the right head-space,” sophomore Danielle Manor said.
Additionally, the team runs a warm up lap together and will occasionally group up to chant an encouraging motto to wish each other good luck.
