Senior Erin Bailey shadows 13 newsnow reporter

Journalism IV student, senior Erin Bailey has dreams of working in the broadcast journalism field and is taking steps to make that dream a reality.

Bailey reached out to Channel 13 newsnow reporter Janet Roach over the summer in hopes of shadowing her one day “in the field”.  And just like that, Bailey was in the trenches.

Roach offered Bailey the opportunity to shadow her on a day the news station received a call about a shooting. Roach was sent to cover the story with Bailey in tow.

“I literally could not believe I was in Ms. Roach’s office as she fact-checked information that would be broadcast later that afternoon; there happened to be a breaking news call about a shooting. Ms. Roach was sent to cover it and I went with her,” Bailey said. “I was actually able to see first hand, in real time, how a broadcaster reacts and what goes into filming and reporting at a crime scene.”

Later that day, Bailey sat with Roach in the media room and watched the broadcast.

According to Bailey, she plans to attend college next fall, majoring in broadcast journalism, then begin her career; living “a day in the life” with Roach only made her more eager to achieve her dreams.
