Falcon wrestling takes the “dubb”, Spotsylvania Duals
What happened: Falcon Wrestling took first place in the Spotsylvania Duals tournament held in Northern Virginia this past weekend. As a team, the wrestlers went 5-0 in their [respective] dual matches, winning the majority. Competing against teams across the East Coast, the Falcons prevailed in a few big time matches against some nationally seeded wrestlers.
Key player: Junior Shane Whitney led the Falcons in the 195 lb. weight class, defeating “a couple of outstanding wrestlers.” Whitney went undefeated in the tournament and boasts an impressive season ,so far, with a record of 18-3; certainly one to watch as a state contender.
They said it: “The 1st place finish gave us confidence as a team going into the Virginia Duals tournament this weekend. It’s a feeling that the team is ready to feel again; we are moving in the right direction when it counts,” junior wrestler (138 lb.) Kenny Damron said.
Key Moment(s): Junior Austin Manning heated up the mat with a win in the 132 lb weight class and then defeated Mountain View High School, one of the better teams at the tournament. This win encouraged the team to set their eyes on prize, winning first place in the tournament.
Up Next: The team will compete at the Virginia Duals held at Hampton Coliseum this upcoming weekend on Friday, Jan. 10 -Saturday, Jan. 11.
