Boys, girls volleyball snatch regional titles
Falcon Boys and Girls Volleyball Teams dominated the regional tournament, crushing the competition. Girls volleyball went into the regional tournament ranked 4th, defeating 5th ranked Hickory High School in the quarter-finals; the girls then went on to finally beat #1 seeded Princess Anne High School (PA) in the semi-finals. The boys team also defeated PA in the quarter-finals, squeezing by Kempsville High School in a 5 set thriller in the semi-finals.
What Happened: The girls team defeated higher ranked rival First Colonial High School (FC) in four sets for the Regional Championship Title with scores of 25-17, 25-27, 25-21, 26-24, while the boys team defeated higher ranked Gloucester with the scores of 19-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-18.
Key players: Sophomore Michelle Humphrey dominated the front row with a total of 18 kills, while the Lady Falcon’s back row had a total of 43 digs. Offensive players sophomore Daniel Hurley tallied a total of 17 kills, junior Jason Wang added 11 kills and junior Kyle Schlaepfer had 27 assists. The boy’s defense shut down any chance of a kill for the Gloucester Dukes with a total of 58 digs.
They said it: “We worked so hard the week leading up to this game and I am so proud of how we came out with no fear, even though we had lost to them several times before. We fought for every point until the final whistle blew,” Wang said.
Key moment: Senior Emily Johnson scored the winning point with a strong float serve which was shanked by FC defender. Junior Kyle Schlaepfer had a five point service run in the fourth set to push the Falcons ahead 16-11.
Up Next: The girls host FC in the semi-final match and the boys will host Glen Allen High School for the semi-final match. These games will be the deciding factor as to whether or not they will compete at the state championship match at VCU.
