‘Americanism’ essay earns distinction

Junior Lindsey Ward was recently honored by the Kempsville Branch 99 Fleet Reserve Association for her entry in their “Americanism” essay contest entitled “What Memorial Day Means to Me”.

According to Ward, her sister previously entered the Kempsville Branch 99 contest and won an honorable mention distinction, which was how she heard about the contest.  Ward also entered last year and won second place.

This year, Ward earned a $500 check, placing first among all 11th grade entries. She finished third in the overall competition, earning $250, which netted her a total of $750.

“The money can be used for anything we want, but I’m putting the money toward my college fund,” Ward said.
