Q & A: senior swimmer Cameron Bailey
Senior swimmer Cameron Bailey has had four successful years on the swim team.
Q: How has the team been doing so far this year?
A: “So far this year the boys are still undefeated. We aim to win both conference and regionals and make a great showing at states, and the girls this year it’s a little bit of a rebuilding season which after never losing conference before its bound to happen. But they’ve still made some surprises and pulled off some really great wins against Kellam and the rest of our competition but Kellam was an amazing win.”
Q: What stroke do you swim?
A: “I swim back stroke.”
Q: What’s a normal practice like?
A: “Practice every other day involves a little bit less than an hour in the weight room and then every day we go through dry lands which you do regular planks, abs, and other exercises and of course our hour in the pool. That hour in the pool can be pretty grueling some days. Some practices are harder than others and most practices are pretty dang hard.”
Q: So far what’s your favorite moment this season?
A: “My favorite moment of the season probably came during one of the meets. At the end of the meet it’s the 4×100 girls free style relay and during that all the boys get together and cheer for the girls. During that time it’s just really cool to see the team support each other. Boys and girls alike, it’s really cohesive.”
Q: How has the team grown since the loss of Gentry?
A: “You can’t really move past losing somebody like Gentry but still I’ve been on the team long enough to see incredible change. Our coaches now are Coach Rudolph and Coach Kwiatkowski, they’re doing an amazing job. They filled that void that coach Gentry has left and they’re amazing coaches. And as far as the leadership, I’ve seen swimmers take on bigger roles than anyone ever had under Gentry. We’ve definitely honored his legacy.”
Q: What’s your favorite thing about being on the swim team?
A: “I always love the team dinners. Our Thursday night pasta parties and then our Friday nights after the meets. It’s really good to finally be able to eat a full meal and not have to worry about the calories.”
Q: Why should people join the swim team?
A: “Well, first swim will get you in the best shape of your life, but more importantly, no matter who you’re friends with on the team, you’re going to find new people that your going to love and become great friends with.”
