Makerspace promotes S.T.E.M.
As students walk into the library, the atmosphere seems relaxed as groups of students huddle around circular tables, actively engaged in hands-on learning activities. There are also two stationary bikes located on the far right, for use by faculty, staff, and students, to read while staying physically active.
The goal of the Makerspace program is to encourage interactive and inclusive learning, that is in line with the Compass to 2020 goals within Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
Makerspace is a program funded by the Virginia Beach Educational Foundation (VBEF). Last year, Head Librarian Judy Rea applied for the $5,000 grant from VBEF to bring the program to school and was awarded the program this year.
The Makerspace program itself is a combination of science, technology, engineering, art, and math, also known as S.T.E.M. Makerspace allows students to be creative, giving them a wide range of learning options including: stationary bikes, chess, checkers, legos, snap circuits, robotics, origami, puzzles, advanced coloring for the art, laser maze, and a self-publishing software.
Rea is also working to get computers with animation programs installed.
“This program started small, but it is in the process of becoming successful, with more and more kids taking part,” Rea said. “We hope it creates a fun, and less structured learning environment for students.”
