SENIOR HALEY HAVERSEN was awarded a certificate by the school’s Falcon Credit Union.

Senior Haley Haversen received recognition for her involvement in the Falcon Credit Union and a stipend for completing the first Falcon Credit Union Internship on Friday.

Principal Dr. Riesbeck and Assistant Principal Mrs. Colden presented Haversen the award along with the Vice President of Marketing at the Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union, Amy Courtwright.

“We are always looking for ideas and ways to market. During PTA meetings, basketball games, and Falcon Fest, we try to market the credit union to parents while they’re here, and that has been an important piece of it as well,” Colden said.

During her freshman year, Haversen presented the idea to start a school credit union to Mrs. Colden, and has been working diligently to get the ball rolling.

After taking time to plan and approve the idea, teachers Mark Girard and Travis Elliott put the idea into place and have become a common site outside of the cafeteria during lunch blocks.

“The program is still very new, we are still trying to work out the kinks,” Haversen explained, “I think more people should be involved in it, simply because it really allows students who aren’t familiar with financial management to understand that they can open a bank account. I think it’s a good program for education and its hands on.”

There will be three new interns to take over Haversen’s place next year, seniors Vicki Chen, Zinnia Chen, and Lena Lin.

According to the incoming interns, they are excited about the opportunities and experience that the internship will bring as well as bettering the program and increasing student involvement.
