Swim team breaks relay record
The swim team brought home a 1st place trophy and broke two records at the Kecoughtan Invitational swim meet last weekend in Newport News. The team has consistently won the meet for many years and was again determined to come home with another win.
“The Cox swim team has a target on their backs. People look at us and strive to beat us. It’s really intimidating and can affect you mentally,” sophomore Anna Michaud said.
The team was nervous to see their standings at the preliminaries, the meet that can qualify swimmers for finals. Swimmers focused and prepared themselves for the finals meet later that day. The preparation worked as the school’s team went on to break two previous meet records.
The first record was broken by swimmers Tara LaRusso, Claire Ostrowski, Georgia DaCruz, and Anna Michaud in the girls’ 200-medley relay with a time of 1.49.89.
“The energy during the relay was so high and everyone was pumped. We worked so hard for that win,” LaRusso said.
The second meet record was broken by senior Georgia DaCruz in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.76.
“I definitely swam better in finals. I really think our team had a big influence on not only my swims but everyone else’s,” DaCruz said. “I was pleased with my times in both my individuals and my relay splits. I am excited to see how I will swim at states this year when I am rested.”
