Junior Ian Lichacz, mayor’s “page”

Junior Ian Lichacz Lichacz has always been interested in politics; or rather the ‘ins and outs’ of everyday life in both the local and national political arena.

So, about five months ago, Lichacz decided to draft a proposal addressed to Mayor Sessoms that outlined and created a “Mayoral Page” position in his office. The position, of course, now for Lichacz himself, but with hope that the position will continue on to future generations.

I was shocked when the Mayor’s office called to schedule an interview with me, “Lichacz said. “ I didn’t expect to hear anything back at all, honestly.”

Initially expecting that the “page” position would include intern tasks such as making copies, answering phones, etc., Lichacz was pleasantly surprised when Sessoms immediately scheduled him to sit in on various city meetings, assist in citywide event planning, and even work on the city budget.

Lichacz recently attended the State of the City Address as a guest of Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms, with the idea of exposing him to one of the city’s biggest and most important events up close and personal.

Sessoms also introduced Lichacz to several state legislators, as well as former governor Bob McDonnell.

“I’ve been working for the mayor for three months now, through September, and plan to work more hours this summer.  Mayor Sessoms has offered me an awesome opportunity to prepare for a future job as a city manager,” Lichacz said. “My Page position, thus far, is what dreams are of as far as I’m concerned.”
