When Art foundations teacher Jessica Szymanski saw the opportunity to enter her students into the Vans Custom Culture art contest she couldn’t pass it up.

The Vans Custom Culture contest’s aim is to help schools enrich their Art programs by making custom shoe designs for Vans and compete with other schools for a chance to win $50,000 for their schools art programs. The contest currently has 5,082 schools nationwide participating and has helped raise over $430,000 for art programs.

Her Art classes have also made their mark in the competion. The Van contest has given blank Vans for her students to design as a part of the contest. According to Szymanski’s the themes for the shoes will be based on art, music, board sports, and local favor. The top ten schools in each District then will be chosen for feedback. The shoes will be sent for voting on April 24 – May 11.

Currently, Szymanski’s 2A, 2B, and 3B classes are working on their shoes.

“The most exciting part has been seeing what the kids come up with; some of the entries are so awesome” Szymanski said.
