KRAMPUS CREEPS BEHIND an unsuspecting German student.

German teacher Herr Becker brings the holidays to life in his classroom, literally.

Last week, Becker was seen walking the school’s halls in a somewhat terrifying costume. Students questioned why such a creature would visit during the holiday season; a time set aside for joy, peace, and love.

According to Becker, it is customary in German-speaking countries that Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated each year on Dec. 6.

In southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and the Alpine areas, Saint Nicholas arrives at children’s homes or at a festival in the town, accompanied by beast-like demons better known as ‘Krampus’ or ‘Perchten’.

‘Krampus’ carries switches that he uses to beat bad children, while Nicholas has little gifts to reward the good children.

In many towns part of the celebration is a ‘Krampus Run’, where these demons chase after people, hitting them with the switches.

But, no worries.  It is all for fun.
