Hurricane Melissa is breaking records and, as of now, is the strongest Hurricane in the Atlantic this year to make landfall. Melissa began her destructive path when it hit Jamaica as a historic category 5 hurricane.
The storm lost strength, though, and is now leaving Cuba as a Category 3. Cuba and Jamaica are facing severe flooding and have been labeled disaster areas.
According to the National Hurricane Center, heavy rain and damaging winds, and flooding will continue in Cuba, and a dangerous storm surge is expected in the Bahamas today. Most of this rain has already fallen on the Caribbean islands, but the runoff and transportation of water through rivers could take some time. Marine warnings are also in effect for the Gulf of America, Caribbean/SW Atlantic, SW North Atlantic, and Eastern Pacific
The rainfall is likely to trigger catastrophic, life-threatening flash flooding and landslides in Jamaica and Haiti, especially in hilly and mountainous terrain, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Hurricane Melissa seems to have no mercy as it drowns out all the beauty the Caribbean has to offer.
