The 53rd annual Yuengling Shamrock Marathon was held last weekend at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront as part of the St. Paddy’s Day tradition.
According to shamrockmarathon.com, the event is the oldest continuously running road race in Virginia Beach. The marathon course is flat and fast, making it the perfect place for anyone to run their first marathon or reach a personal record (PR). The events offered include the Marathon, Half Marathon, 8K, and various other challenges. Participants who run can also see spectators in crazy green ‘fits’ and entertainment along the course, complete with a festive finish line celebration. After the race, participants can enjoy a continuous post-race celebration on the beach with adult beverages and live music.
J & A Racing organized the event and offered the opportunity for other local businesses to volunteer. Anyone can volunteer to cheer on runners and hand out electrolytes and water to those who need it. According to the shamrockmarathon.com website, putting in the time as a volunteer is a great way to pay it forward in hopes of running in a future race, showing thanks for a race that was completed in the past, or giving back to the community.
Elementary school students also participated in the Final Mile race, which strives to promote lifelong fitness and a healthy lifestyle to young children. Many of these children also help to raise money for one of the event’s sponsors, Operation Smile.
