The CHS annual “Fashion Show” and “Best of Cox” combined again this year as one event, which took place mid-January in the auditorium.
Each year, Advanced Fashion students create a themed show that incorporates style with dances and runway walks, while friends and family gather to see the students and numerous teachers flaunt their outfits and show their dance moves.
This year’s theme, ‘Through the Decades’ featured stylish outfits that represented the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Both students and teachers wore clothes from local boutiques and shops including WRV, Polish Boutique, Golden Hour Boutique, Pixelated Boutique, Ocean Palm, and the Bahama Shop. These shops ‘lend’ outfits for the night so those performing are dressed in trendsetting “fits” head-to-toe.
To make the show more real these same students and teachers learned basic choreographed dances, participated in dress rehearsals, and walked the stage as if they were in a runway fashion show.
Senior Elizabeth Jensen performed in multiple scenes, her favorite though included an elegant prom dress.
“It was super fun, it was good to see how people worked together, created the performance, and became friends,” Jensen said.
In between decade styled segments, ‘The Best of Cox” was introduced; this is an annual event in which senior boys choose a talent and perform on stage in front of judges and the fashion audience. Seniors Stellan Stafford, Hudson Cleveland, Cole Ludford, and Brady Dunn competed to see who would be named ‘the best’.
Dunn performed first showing his “archery skills” as he climbed through hula-hoops and pretended to be on the lookout for his prey, while senior Elle Vanoverberghe dressed as a deer pretending to flee from Dunn who targeted her with his fake bow. Ultimately Dunn prevailed and carried her off the stage as his quarry.
Ludford, who is somewhat known as a doppelganger to the John Heder, who played Napoleon in the film Napoleon Dynamite performed the movie’s iconic dance to funk band Jamiroquai’s “Canned Heat.” Ludford clearly had practiced his routine, as every move was on point. He even fixed his glasses in the process.
Stafford, who claims to be America’s biggest Pepsi fan, chose to show his wide range of ‘fun facts’ about his favorite beverage. Four cups were placed in front of Stafford that contained different types of soda. Stafford had to taste test each one to decide which was Pepsi. Not only did he correctly guess his treasured soft drink, but also named the other three correctly.
Cleveland’s performance was a motivational commencement speech, in which he spoke about finding one’s purpose and how the effect and power of one person can change a life. He also included quotes from UFC fighter Conor McGregor. Cleveland’s speech clearly left a mark on the judges.
In the end, the audience and judges decided the winners. Cleveland won the overall ‘Best of Cox’, while Ludford’s “Napoleon Dynamite” won the ‘People’s Choice Award’.
The two combined events, ‘Through the Decades’ fashion show and ‘Best of Cox’ created a night true to Falcon tradition.
