Most days, junior parking is blocked off with barriers while the Marching Falcons prepare to perform in CHS home football games and in various contests throughout the city and state. In the past, the long hours put in by students and instructors have paid off, leading to numerous 1st place trophies. This year is no exception.
The Marching Falcons have started off their season strong, taking home their most recent 1st place title after their performance, the “Drums Along The Boulevard” held at Princess Anne High School. The squad won all five categories in the contest including: best music, visuals, and color guard, as well as awards based on how well they worked together in combinations and what band was the best in percussion. Despite being one of the smallest bands in the competition, the Falcons still managed to come out on top.
Long-time Band Director Mike Lane, and various other staff instructors, organized the instruments and visuals and then used their knowledge to teach various segments of the performance to the student band members. Senior band leaders Emily Cotter and Liam McMann were responsible for conducting and leading the band.
The parade and performance took effort from everyone, therefore members were given a tight schedule and no one could afford to be late.
“What helped was all the long hours of rehearsal and hard work from the students leading up to the competitions,” Lane said.
They also won their competition most recently at Hickory High School in Chesapeake where they, again, placed 1st in the 5A class.
One of the most important contests will come in November at Liberty University where the Marching Falcons hope to win another state championship.
