One of the newest school clubs was recently started and will be sponsored by Oceanography teacher Mr. Ripa and Physical Education (PE) teacher Mr. Ingram. Meetings for the club began in early September and the group met at 1st street at the Oceanfront last weekend for their first session.
The sponsors hope is to bring both beginning and experienced surfers within the school together to create a community of members that can not only surf but do some volunteer work within the community.
“We want to do some community work like a beach cleanup, and after that get members in the water,” Ingram said.
Ingram and Ripa are also hoping that local surf shops such as Wave Riding Vehicles and Coastal Edge will offer to donate boards for members who do not own one.
“I will join the surf club because I love surfing and I want to give back to the beach for everything it has given me,” sophomore member West Keenan.
Sponsors Ingram and Ripa also have plans to contact other local high schools and get them involved, perhaps creating a contest between schools. While the club is in its first stages, the sponsors have big ideas and plans they hope to implement in the near future.
