Biology teacher Ms. Lant and Construction teacher Mr. Shields are both planning an educational trip to Belize in Central America. The purpose of this trip is for students to see science in a different environment and to learn all about the aspects of the scientific world.
Q: Why did you decide to sponsor the trip?
A: “The trip is a STEM trip and I want to be able to take students into the field and have a day where we can learn and not have papers to turn in and to see science in action.”
Q: How many people are going in total?
A: “At this point, I have seven, and we’re getting ready to do another meeting and we’re hoping to get another five.”
Q: What is your main goal for the students during the trip?
A: “Again to experience science in action, to explore another country, and to get to know other cultures, working right with the scientists involved in the different research and projects they are doing. For example, we are going to be participating in a reforestation project.”
Q: What part of the trip are you most excited about?
A: “The ziplining in the canopy of the rainforest.”
Q: What would you say to any students considering signing up?
A: “Consider signing up. Even though we don’t have a long time to prepare the payment plan, you can fundraise. I will support any fundraising and the fundraising goes to you and you also get a donation page that doesn’t charge. Another thing is that they can help you with your college essay because you can use it as experience. There are also scholarships available if you apply by November. You can also earn a college credit if you go a step further.”
