The first week in February generally marks the annual, nationwide “Signing Day” when senior student-athletes put pen to paper and ‘sign’ a letter of intent to attend the college/university of their choice, to “play” the sport in which they excel. However, CHS generally holds a fall and spring signing day in addition due to the many athletes who commit to play their chosen sport. In a rather random event, only two students were honored for their commitments, senior student-athletes and football players Gerard Johnson and Sam Braidwood.
In the past, stands in the gymnasium would be filled with parents, teachers, friends, along with local news outlets, watching and waiting eagerly for the moment their student becomes official in regard to a [respective] college/university. Earlier this year, four students signed letters for field hockey and baseball. This particular ceremony was dedicated to football.
In front of family and friends, Johnson and Braidwood took the stage as Head Football Coach Tyler Noe sang their praises before the “signing”. In most cases these two players would have signed with others on National Signing Day in February, however, soon to be Virginia Tech Hokie “Rod Johnson” will finish Term 1 mid January, move to Blacksburg, Virginia, and begin college on January 18. Braidwood plans to attend William & Mary College in Williamsburg where he will continue his kicking career.
“Overall, I enjoyed Signing Day because I had the opportunity to “sign” while my coach, family and friends were watching,” Johnson said. “I’m happy to have the opportunity in general and I’m excited for this next chapter in my life.”
