Love Run/Walk fundraises for CHKD
The Annual Cavalier Love Run/Walk fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD), in its 16th year, once again proved to be a success. Students, parents, faculty and a variety of people from around the community came together on Saturday, braving the freezing cold, in support of a worthy cause.
Each year, the school teams up with Princess Anne (PA) High School to create a fundraiser and set a monetary goal in donations collected for the hospital. This year’s goal was $17,000, all of which both schools intend to be donated to children’s hospital.
“My favorite part about Love Run was making better connections with teachers and peers as well as learning how to make balloon animals.” Junior Olivia Burd said.
The Love Run/Walk event itself is a 5k, or 3.1 miles, and once again took place in the Thalia neighborhood near (PA) where participants could choose whether to run, walk, or both. The race also accommodated younger participants in the form of a 1 mile fun run/walk in order to incorporate everyone.
The purpose of the annual event is to “give back” to an institution that has saved the lives of numerous children, not only in the community, but around the country, with generous donations from events such as the Annual Love Run/Walk so the hospital is able to continuously fund research for what are “now” incurable diseases. Participation in the race was not required in order to contribute, some contributed through the website. And, of course, all donations were welcomed and greatly appreciated.
Students from both schools, as well as various volunteers also contributed to the race not through monetary donations, but through assisting the participants, handing out food and drinks such as water, Gatorade, bagels, fruits, doughnuts and protein bars.
A silent auction was also held during this event and all items including gift cards and food were donated by the community.
