Coquettes finish first, Manchester Lancer Dancer invitational
The Coquettes dance squad soared last weekend during their competition the Manchester Lancer Dancer competition at Manchester High School in Midlothian, Virginia. As the only school from the Beach, the Falcons competed against nine Northern Virginia schools, placing in two out of three categories; taking first place in ‘kick’ and second in ‘pom’.
“I think that the school’s in Northern Virginia have a different technique and and ‘specialize in other types of dance, such as hip-hop,” junior Coquette Kayleigh Cannaday said. “Our technique is different, we specialize in ‘kick’ and always do well in that category. But, it’s a great experience though to travel and see other high school teams perform.”
And, while other sports seasons are consolidated into a few months time, the Coquettes dance through the winter and fall seasons. Led by senior captains Katherine Harriman and Emily Smith and junior captain Taylor Thompson, the Coquettes generally perform at various events including football and basketball games, pep rallies and community events such as the Holiday Parade at the Beach.
The Coquettes are coached by Stephanie Craft, who does not work at the school, relying heavily on her captains to run practices and choreograph routines as they prepare for basketball season and the upcoming winter pep rally.
“I’m proud of our squad,” Smith said. “We practice hard, take hits, get bruised and battered just like any other team. And, our “season” is twice as long so it takes dedication to be a Coquette.”
