Once in a lifetime opportunity
Students looking for a chance to perform in different parts of the world had their dreams recently answered. The Governor’s School for the Arts took a group of students to Japan in cities like Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, and Miyazaki. They performed in their different areas of experience: acting, music, and dance.
Along with the tour, there were foreign exchange opportunities, visits to Japanese high schools, and the attendance ceremonies that honored musicians from various cities.
However, not all Governor School students are able to have the opportunity to perform in different parts of the world. Senior Celine Brass and Juniors Jack Beckner and Noah Spiegel-Blum were fortunate to experience the unforgettable tour of Japan.
“Getting to know the hosts’ families was the best part. When we had to leave, we were all crying, which is crazy, considering we had only known them for five days,” Brass said.
French Honor Society sponsor Margaret Beckner was able to take part in the tour as an involved chaperone.
According to Beckner, she experienced the joy and energy from the students and was thrilled to see her son, Jack, enjoy the trip along with his three friends.
For students Celine Brass, Noah Spiegel-Blum and Jack Beckner, the opportunity to perform in front of various stages was an honor. The three students clearly experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“What an honor for these students to represent both Norfolk and Virginia Beach in their Japanese sister cities, as well as a chance to showcase the level of talent and professionalism that the Governor’s School for Arts brings to all of its performances. To travel and live in a country and culture that is so different from ours is on of those rare and priceless chances that is truly once in a lifetime,” Margaret Beckner said.
