SCA sponsors #lunchbag
SCA is in the process of organizing the 2nd annual bagged lunch charity event to benefit #lunchbag, a service movement dedicated to empowering and inspiring people to understand the power of giving through the use of social media.
The event will be held in the cafeteria at 2:45 p.m. after school on Friday, Dec. 16, and is open to any students, faculty, and staff looking to make a difference in their community. Some of the clubs involved in the event already include: National Honor Society, Operation Smile, Key Club, SCA, Rho Kappa, and the Science and English Honor Societies.
According to hashtaglunchbag.org, the goal is to create and use bagged lunches, complete with love messages, as a vessel to spread this love and share our experiences to inspire others.
Last year, 100 students from various clubs and organizations assembled to make 606 bagged lunches which included turkey sandwiches, chips, and clementines, complete with a positive and inspirational note in just 19 minutes. All lunches made went to the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center (JCOC), a social service organization focusing on Virginia Beach’s homeless citizens.
The students’ goal this year is to make 1,000 lunches in 30 minutes, also to be delivered to the JCOC.
SCA sponsor Sabrina Shumate is organizing the event, along with other club sponsors who plan to help the cause.
“It’s incredible to watch the students work together so well and so willingly to accomplish a goal that benefits others,” Shumate said. “The event is so inspiring to everyone involved.”
This year’s event produced 1,300 sandwiches in 30 minutes with the help of over 200 volunteers, including Superintendent Dr. Spence.
Lunches were then delivered to the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center, the Union Mission Ministries organization, People in Need Ministry of Virginia Beach, and Wesley Memorial UMC‘s “Club Sandwich.”
