Junior Madison “Maddy” Walker was recently named Miss Teen Virginia USA 2017 at Virginia Tech’s Moss Center in Blacksburg, VA. Walker competed against representatives from different regions within the state, ages 14-19 years old.

“As a first time pageant contestant, it was surreal to even make the top 12 contestants,” Walker said.

The pageant, held Friday, Nov. 18 – Sunday, Nov. 20, included a Charity Night, preliminary competition, and a final competition.

According to Walker, she chose to compete in the pageant after discovering not only the scholarship opportunities it might afford, but also to use the Miss Teen Virginia platform to spread awareness for a cause close to her heart, Tiny Superheroes, a charity that provides superhero ‘capes’ to children with cancer, congenital heart defects, Epilepsy, undiagnosed syndromes, rare diseases, Autism, etc.

Walker’s brother, Bryan, has Down syndrome and she sees first-hand the struggles children with disabilities face every second of every day.

“I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to bring more awareness to Tiny Superheroes, not only because of my brother who is my best friend, but to bring hope and courage to all children who are fighting to overcome an illness or to live with a disability,” Walker said. “Without Bryan, I wouldn’t have won the title, made the top five, or even the top 12. I wouldn’t be the person I am today; he inspires me.”
