Unpaid consequences parking decals
After a late night of studying junior TJ Osborne couldn’t seem to get himself out of bed. Arriving at school 30 minutes late he realizes that all the parking spots are filled.
Driving around the lot aimlessly he spots a tight squeeze between two cars. Both cars dangerously close to the line, he attempts to pull into the spot. His 2002 Subaru Outback slowly enters with extreme precision; he puts the car in park.
Exiting his car, Osborne side steps his way down the aisle. While quickly approaching the front door he looks to his right and spots a car without a decal. Frustration sets in.
Osborne is aggregated that he had to struggle to get his spot, after paying the mandatory $35 fee, when another student easily parked for free.
“The junior lot is already packed without people parking without decals, I don’t understand why they do that,” Osborne said.
Although some students do park without decals, the school system has infiltrated certain steps to help prevent the problem. Administering warnings and boots is something Vice Principal Dr. Sicignano, in charge of parking, does to help protect students who have purchased decals.
“The school has a goal to have three boots and to check the lot at a minimum of once daily, depending on availability,” Dr. Sicignano said.
Warnings are given out for first offences, which gives the student a chance to realize that parking without a decal is unacceptable. Following their first warning a boot is administered to the car and is only removed after a fine of $80 is paid.
Senior Jason Owens missed the bus and was forced to drive his car to school. He parked without a decal and parked in the student lot. When the final bell rang he went to his car and found a warning sticker on his windshield.
“One time I parked without a decal and I got a warning. I never tried to park without a decal again because I realized that there are consequences,” Owens said.
