Helping hands
Juniors Bella Smith and Phoebe Large combined efforts to bring awareness to acts of kindness that often go unnoticed during the holiday season. Smith’s mother, Vanessa Bertini, works at CHKD and that is where she met “Bruce,” a custodian at the children’s hospital.
“Bruce” spends his holidays helping those in need, giving clothing and food in hopes of making spirits a bit brighter. Every Christmas, he lends his time at the Martin Luther King Memorial Park in Norfolk to feed and give clothing to those less fortunate.
“We just want to give back to the community as much as we can, especially with all of the reports of cold weather coming,” Large said. “We want them to be prepared and to stay healthy.”
In order to help “Bruce,” Smith and Large decided to help him help them. Aside from the GoFundMe page already set up, the girls decided to collect and donate clothing: jackets, shoes, socks, pants, shirts, of larger sizes, to deliver to the King Memorial Park on Wednesday, Dec. 23.
Please bring donations, no cash or food, to room 220 to show your support for the cause.
