Joe Gentry: inspirational, innovative, extraordinary
November 20, 2014
Former Biology teacher and Swimming & Diving Head Coach Joe Gentry passed away peacefully in his sleep early this morning after an 11 year battle with prostate cancer.
As both a teacher and coach, Gentry was more than a mentor. He was a friend who truly cared about those around him, attempting to bring out the best in everyone he encountered.
Great Neck Life magazine featured Gentry in December 2012 in which he openly discussed his illness, his career, and his commitment to coaching the school’s state title winning Swim & Dive teams.
“I just don’t want to miss out on my life, because my life is more important than laying in some hospital bed or on some couch feeling sorry for myself, ” Gentry said. “I can still teach, I can still coach, I can still be a great husband and friend.”
Gentry truly was a flash of sunlight on a cloudy day. His inspirational nature, friendly disposition, and overall drive will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
True to fashion, Gentry has donated his body to science.
Funeral arrangements for Gentry are as follows:
Visitation: Friday, November 28 from 6-8 PM @ HD Oliver Funeral Home Hilltop
Service: Saturday, November at 11 AM @ the Eastern Shore Chapel
