Senior Alex Mock’s musical passion

SENIOR ALEX MOCK plays his guitar for classmates.

A-nine-year old Alex Mock walks into a guitar store, somewhat in awe of his surroundings, in that he can barely focus on one instrument at a time.  Then, his father hands him a guitar, a Fender Squier 51. Mock knows instantly that his decision has been made; this is the instrument he will learn to play, and the special guitar that he still has to this day.

Now a senior, Mock is a hard guy not to like.  Upon meeting him for the first time, he gives a good impression. With a seemingly subtle, yet genuine smile on his face, he most likely has a guitar in his hands.

“Music’s a big part of my life, like when I bring my guitar in, it’s a struggle for me to put it down” Mock said.

Mock has opinions on many aspects of life.  Thus, when he feels the need to express those opinions he writes music.  Music gives Mock a positive outlet in which to express feelings that might otherwise be viewed negatively.

“I started writing a political song and one of the verses was just me going off on how stupid Sarah Palin is,” Mock said.

Music however isn’t the only thing in his life.  Like many high schoolers in the area, Mock enjoys surfing and spending time with his friends.  Yet, unlike many of his peers, there is a broad array of extra-curricular activities in which he is involved.

Mock is an athlete, competing not only on the track and soccer teams, but he acts, enjoys photography, and is a member of the National Thespian Honor Society. Furthermore, in his “free” time, he still finds time for his musical passion.

“I’ve written a few of my own songs. I write my own music and I write my own lyrics,” Mock said.

As for the type of songs that Mock writes; well, they are about as diverse as his other interests.

According to Mock, he writes sad songs, but also writes love songs. Sometimes he just writes angry, stupid songs that make fun of stuff.

A well-rounded individual, Mock is seemingly pleasant. And, if one takes the time to know him, he is a cool person to be around.  If there was only one word that could be used to describe Alex, it would simply be: ‘chill’.

However, Mock is able to capture the quintessence of his personality and passion much better than any one word.

“I love it [music] because it’s so creative and free; there are no real restrictions. You can make up whatever you want really, and if it sounds good to you then who cares what other people think. It’s your own creation,” Mock said.
