Ongoing rivalry endures
January 20, 2016
The “Nest” overflowed with Falcon Spirit in the scorching, hot gymnasium.
Per usual, chanting, screaming, and trash-talking was exchanged between the school’s “Nest” students and the First Colonial High School (FC) Patriot’s “C6” spirit section.
Even with all of the hype though, both teams continued play back and forth as both teams’ players sprinted, shot, dunked, and blocked.
The schools’ rivalry is epic and enduring due to their close proximity and intense competition. Prior incidences caused harsh security at the game, but the teams still went all out, action packed from the whistle blow to end of the buzzer.
Recently, the two teams set to square off once again. The school wore home team white, while FC took the court in baby blue. Both teams showed confidence, even though both teams have had a slow start to the season.
“It was extremely loud and tension levels were high due to our rivalry which brought in a massive crowd,” junior Peyton Porter said.
The final score was First Colonial 34, Cox 33, with a missed buzzer beater shot by Kavon James. The team is already preparing for the next rivalry match up and don’t plan to disappoint their supporters.
Senior guard Chauncy Lizama, one of two senior starters this season, believes that in order for the team to stay competitive in the future they need to keep the same intensity from start to finish.
“As a team, I think we need to work on finishing out our second half stronger, keep fighting until the buzzer,” Lizama said.
Although they lost to FC this year, they’ve come back strong the following week beating the Bayside High School Marlins 43-36.
