Falcon Press News member Erin Houston visits University of Maryland and writes her opinion on the school.

University of Maryland, College Park lives just a 30 minute subway trip away from Washington D.C . Ranked the #57 National Universities in the United States, according to U.S News, the college flourishes with excellent academic and sports programs.

University of Maryland is the home of the Terrapins and takes pride in having some of the top engineering, architecture, and business schools in the country. Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets, and Kevin Plank, founder of Under Armour, are just a few of University of Maryland’s impressive alumni.

Although it is a big school with about 40,000 students, it still strives to have a small town feel. When visiting during finals week, the college community continued to thrive and keep up a positive energy.  Students were spread across many different activities, from engineering students testing their latest invention to students in government holding rallies to support their hopeful presidential candidates. Maryland has a lot to offer.

Due to it being Finals Week, “Puppy Farm” was in the midst. It’s an event to allow students to take a break and calm their nerves by petting puppies from the local SPCA shelter.

Maryland takes pride in beating their rival, University of Virginia, with having a bigger and “better” main lawn.

Known for their football, basketball, lacrosse, and baseball programs, they continue to move up the ranks every year in each sport, leading students to the professional leagues.  Maryland has already been ranked third for the upcoming NCAA Basketball season and predicted to head to the final four in March Madness.

The students are welcoming and friendly, making it one of the Top 25 LGBT schools in the nation. There is something for everyone to do and get involved in, you will never get bored.

The overall feel of the campus is ecstatic, with tons of energy, something you won’t find at an Ivy League school. However, though it does not have an Ivy League feel, it has very high expectations for students. With a 47% acceptance rate, it is a competitive school with an extensive application process.

When touring with friend and current junior at Maryland, Ryan Beveridge, he could only describe Maryland in one way, “There’s no place like Maryland!”
