Art students view local art, up close and personal

NORFOLK’S NEON ART district compiles the work of various artists in the community throughout several city blocks. One of the district’s newest additions is the mural dedicated to and honoring veterans.

Art students recently took a field trip to Norfolk’s Chrysler Museum of Art where they viewed pieces that were produced by inmates currently incarcerated in Norfolk and VA Beach facilities.

In addition, local Sheriff’s deputies and Chrysler Museum’s Michael Berlucchi were able to engage students through discussion, reflecting about the art that was created with minimal “jail safe” supplies.

Students then had the opportunity to tour Norfolk’s NEON district and were lucky enough to watch a local artist work on an upcoming mural honoring veterans, as well as watch an actual glass blowing demo.

According to Art teacher Jessica Syzmanski, she believes it’s a vital part of art education for students to get out of the classroom and immerse themselves into local arts culture.
