GSA WELCOMES THE school to its first ever assembly to celebrate diversity.

The first Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Club assembly will be held in the auditorium on Monday, Dec. 5, during 4A classes where students will have the opportunity to learn the club’s purpose and some historical facts about prominent Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) figures.

Along with a student-run panel, there will be speakers from within the community, including the Virginia Beach Police Department LGBT liaison and the current Hampton Roads Pride President, Michael Berlucchi.

Class signups are posted in the mail room; all are welcomed to attend.

“We feel that this assembly will provide an open conversation to this sensitive topic and enable more schools to address this topic,” GSA President Wesley McKee said.

Students received an AlertNow message from Principal Dr. Riesbeck on Sunday night explaining a sudden delay to the GSA Club assembly, now postponed until later in the school year.

According to a recent Virginian-Pilot article, the decision to postpone was made by Riesbeck in order to be more inclusive to all groups.

“This will give organizers an opportunity to connect with a wide variety of student clubs and community organizations,” Riesbeck said.
