Letters to the Editor: Saturday School

May 7, 2014

I think that Saturday school is much better than adding 20 minutes to the day, because I would rather go one day rather than a few weeks with a longer school period. It’s better to get it over with and not worry about figuring out what time we get out of class. But on a Saturday it’s the same schedule so there is no confusion. What are one or two Saturday schools taken from our weekends? I would rather go on a Saturday and get home at 2:10 than having an extra 20 minutes added and getting home at 3 for several weeks.

I think that Saturday school is an outrage. Parents and students have things to do on Saturday, especially people who have jobs. When we went to school on Saturday, it was pointless because we didn’t even do anything because of how many people were missing and we didn’t want to leave them behind. We already are the only school system that goes to school 183 days, and we are the only school system that added time and also added Saturday school. The Jewish people were also outraged because Saturday is their holiday. Why not go on Sunday and make Christians miss their holiday? It is unfair and not socially acceptable. I also don’t think that it is fair for teachers to go on Saturday as well because they barely get days off and then now they have to go on Saturday.

Honestly, the Saturday schools were pointless. In almost every one of my classes, we either watched a movie or had a study block. On the third Saturday, I had to leave school early just to make it to my Lacrosse game. The Saturday schools were not only annoying, they also interfered with sports. Students need their Saturdays to do homework. I have practice every night, and on Friday, I look forward to my Saturday to finish all my tasks and chores.

Saturday school felt like a waste of time. The feeling of waking up on a Saturday for the 6th day in a row did not give me motivation to learn and participate in class. It’s not fair for my parents either to have to worry about me getting up and getting to school on time. Everyone in class on those Saturdays was not participating and the teachers weren’t either. Only a few kids showed up to our classes. The absence counted also. Not to mention but, kids are already sleep deprived. The 30 minutes extended was the worst waste of time and interfered with sports and after school activities.

Personally, I think that I learn better on Saturday schools. I would rather go to a couple Saturday schools than weeks with extended time. They shouldn’t double our work. With the added time a lot of kids left earlier anyways. I don’t want to have Saturday school, but I don’t want a change of extended time, especially since other public city schools didn’t have added time.
